Plumbers' Association of California

PAC Advocates Water Repurposing in California Homes

PAC Advocates Water Repurposing in Calif

The Plumbers Association of California is full steam ahead in terms of promoting water recycling and repurposing among homes in California. The PAC says repurposing water is one of the best ways to conserve water use and lower carbon footprint as it helps preserve resources.

In its official website, the PAC has posted tips on how to recycle used water in and around the home. PAC Executive Director Benjamin Frost has also been doing the rounds of schools and communities in encouraging everyone to recycle water and lower water consumption at home.

“One of the best ways to repurpose water is to harvest rain water. Rain water has a lot of uses. It can be used for cleaning, watering the plants and the lawn, as well as cleaning cars. If everyone in California will undertake such a measure, a substantial amount of water can be conserved and this is what we at PAC are aiming for,” says Frost.

The United States Environment Protection Agency has explained in its official website how water recycling can be beneficial.

“While recycling is a term generally applied to aluminum cans, glass bottles, and newspapers, water can be recycled as well. Water recycling is reusing treated wastewater for beneficial purposes such as agricultural and landscape irrigation, industrial processes, toilet flushing, and replenishing a ground water basin (referred to as ground water recharge). Water recycling offers resource and financial savings.”

The website Conserve Energy Future meanwhile shared a list of ways on how homes can recycle water use. One of the areas mentioned in their list is recycling water in the shower. Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association

“Collection of shower water is the easiest and simplest way to reuse water at home. Water from the shower can be reused after a bath by plugging the drain and letting the bath fill up. It can then be manually collected from the bathtub using a bucket. Alternatively, one can stand in a basin or bucket when taking a shower to collect the water. After bath, the collected water can be reused for watering outdoor flowers and lawns.”

Apartment Therapy also came up with a list on how to repurpose water around the home. In their blog post they mentioned five ways to reuse and conserve water specifically for watering the plants. International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials

“Water used to boil pasta and vegetables is often nutrient-rich and great for plants. Similarly, water used to rinse fruit and veggies could be reused by placing a shallow bucket in the kitchen sink. Collect Cold Shower Water – Even with an efficient hot water heating system, it can take a minute or so for bathing water to heat up. It’s a little extra work, but keeping a bucket in the shower could provide enough water to take care of daily indoor watering.”

The rest of the tips can be found here.

The PAC encourages all homes to repurpose water, and reduce their consumption. Foster says this has been an initiative that they will continue to advocate.
